It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of senior Club member Stuart Game 19/2/1948 - 22/4/2019.
|
This short tribute to Stu has been provided by his wife, Susan, who has been part of his crew since the beginning.
|
Stu commenced sailing out of Claremont Yacht Club around 1979 racing a Red Jacket “Elarby” with great enthusiasm but perhaps little finesse. Stu was a born helmsman, he was at one with his boat, the sails and the wind. He honed his skills to become a fine and competitive yachtsman.

Stu joined the South of Perth Yacht Club in September 1986 and joined the large Red Witch Fleet at the time with “Shalom”, red hull, red spinnaker. We won at least one State Championship in Shalom, and many Consistency wins, and two of the James Hardie Match Racing events.
|
We travelled to Albany, and Bunbury for Championships, and would not miss a Cockburn Sound Regatta after Christmas each year. Our twilight evenings on a Wednesday were so much fun....what can I say.

Yes, we did sail to Rottnest many a time in the Red Jacket, the Witch and the S80. Also, by the by, Stu and I spent two years living on our wooden boat “Grace May” in the Mediterranean/Spain/Gibraltar, and then in Jersey, the Channel Island prior to emigrating to Australia.

Stu and I purchased “Fair Game” the S80 we have now, and the S80 that Clint has just so very kindly painted up for Stu. When we first sailed in the S80 events, we would see an average of 25 boats competing, it was tremendous, can you picture the start line!! I don’t think we won too many times but we were up there and regular contestants. Stu played fair and had an excellent knowledge of racing rules. Yes, he did initiate a few ‘protests’.

Stu supported many inexperienced sailors by passing on his knowledge and skills. He became an Australian Yachting Federation Coach but never was too formally involved in the training.

Until this last couple of years, Stu Game, Fair Game and crew were to be seen on Saturday and Wednesday racing, and I am sure he would like to pass on his thanks and appreciation to the crew members who played such a big part in the racing over the years, thank you.
|
Stu very much enjoyed being a member of SoPYC and made many, many friends. Friday lunchtimes he loved. He was a member of the ‘old farts club’ way back when, a group of mature sailors who met socially, including Leon Symonds and Neville Hall, among other worthy salts. So thank you to SoPYC for all the fun we have had.

Stu died on Monday 22 April 2019, after a brave battle with lung cancer. He never believed he would lose, he was planning to join his friends for lunch this Friday at SoPYC.
