Dogs at the Club
|
|
Members are reminded that as per the Club Bylaws, dogs are not allowed on the Club premises. Members may carry dogs from their car to their boat. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and any dog droppings must be picked up and disposed of in a general rubbish bin.
|
|

Parking after using the launch ramp
|
It is important that all members who are using the launch ramp do not block other vessels or causal parking bays as depicted in the image below. Members are to park their trailer and/or vessel within the allocated lines and park their car in the car park. This gives more members the opportunity to leave their trailer and/or vessel in the parking area. If vehicles and trailers are not parked correctly a wheel clamp will be applied.

State Championships this weekend
Most major classes have their State Championships on this March Long Weekend and this year is no exception.

- Keelboat classes are on the ocean or on the river pending water space.

Tessa Parkinson, our Head Coach has resigned to go to work for Australian Sailing. Her calls are being forwarded to Mikael Lundh. I would like to thank Tessa for her outstanding work and her commitment to the Club, not many people will be able to fill her shoes! The Club has embarked on recruiting another head coach. Bunbury and Return Race Report
|
|
Everyone knew that weather models predicted a long, slow and tedious Bunbury and Return this year but nobody could have predicted the outcome!
|
|
Line honours favourite Indian sailed out to watch the start but took no part in the race, leaving Alan Stein’s Dirty Deeds as the new favourite.
|
|
The weather pundits got it pretty right and yachts stumbled from the start line to the windmills and turned south. As expected, the Dirty Girl led the fleet early, hard pressed by Geoff Bishop’s King 40 Checkmate. As the two leaders approached the shallows behind Carnac Island, Twitch headed west. We held our breath until finally, Deeds tacked for deeper water, followed by Checkmate. The two were now neck and neck but looming up in the distance was Barry and Betty Walsh’s Beneteau 44.7 Twitch, now wound up in the light breeze and matching the leaders for speed.

Off the northern end of Garden Island, Twitch was able to sail through Dirty Deeds to leeward, with Checkmate, which had tacked again trying to run parallel to the shoreline now sharing the lead. Midway along Garden Island, South of Perth’s Twitch was leading the fleet in every sense – first on line honours, IRC and YAH.

An agonisingly slow trip saw the fleet bunched up again as it passed Dawesville at 5am, Twitch maintaining a narrow lead over a chasing pack including Dirty Deeds, Al Fresco and Checkmate. It was almost 1am on Sunday when Dirty Deeds, now leading the pack, rounded the Bunbury turning mark, but computer predictions kept Twitch at the head of the leader board on handicap. Chris Higham’s Argo had a miserable night, rounding the Bunbury mark just behind the S&S34 Huckleberry, with only Dieter Plaumbaum’s Christine behind her.

On the run home, Dirty Deeds established her authority on the race and steadily drew away to claim line honours. Checkmate also continued her good performance, edging ahead of Al Fresco and Twitch. Argo eventually found some form to surge past Huckleberry, Atomic Blonde and Fourth Dimension but by the time this group reached Dawesville, Dirty Deeds had already passed the Windmills on the final leg to the finish.

In the end, the topsy turvy nature of the race saw the line honours winner taking an incredible thirty hours and twenty minutes to cover the course, nearly double the race record. Christine retired, leaving the last boat home to arrive in nearly 29 hours. That boat was Huckleberry, the smallest and oldest yacht in the fleet, which deservedly came away with the overall IRC handicap trophy. It was a fitting reward too, remembering that it was Huckleberry which rescued the survivors of last year’s tragic race.

South of Perth boats bookended the YAH results, with Twitch announced as the YAH winner and Argo taking out the wooden spoon, an outcome no one could have predicted. Twitch was nudged out of a podium position on IRC during the final stages of the race to finish fourth. Spare a thought for the other South of Perth guys who missed out altogether – the group who make up a significant proportion of Indian’s crew. ~ Bernie Kaaks

The Sea Scouts of WA will be operating their annual 30-hour Swanabout Sailing Event from 9:00am Saturday 9th March through until 3:00pm Sunday, 10th March, 2019.
|
Whilst our Scout Members will be briefed to stay away from Mid River Start Lines and Yacht Club Finishing Lines, we wish to make your members aware of the additional presence of Scout Boats on the Swan River during the event. Over 80 boats have nominated for the event this year with over 300 young people participating. Your assistance would be appreciated in advising your sailing and powerboat members of this event. This Scouting event is listed with the Aquatic Council.
