Prior to the 2015/16 sailing season, it was decided to pilot a merger of the Division 4 and 5 fleets to see how a broader range of keel boats would fare in a combined fleet.
The Division 3 pilot was a resounding success, resulting in keen and enjoyable racing and increased participation.
Division 3 caters for a diverse range of small keelboats and swing keel craft in a mixed fleet up to 8.5 metres. The fleet is comprised of many different designs, ranging from Endeavour 24, MB24, Spacesailor 24 and Beneteau F235, through to Castle 650 and a Mini 6.5. This size of boat is one attractive to people new to keelboat sailing and the Division welcomes and is very supportive of new members.
The major racing activity is on Saturday afternoons. A number of different competitions are held throughout the season including Consistency and other specific events that add variety and interest.
With such a diversity in boats, where different conditions favour different yachts, racing is always interesting with several different races going on within the race as boats spar with one another. The handicapping system ensures performance differences are recognised and fosters healthy competition.
But most importantly, we race for pleasure and there is a good comradarie among members.
Apart from Saturday racing, some Division 3 boats also take part in Wednesday afternoon races and Thursday evening twilights.
