This week saw the publication of the new Australian Sailing Blue Book covering the new racing rules of sailing 2021-2024. The new edition of the Blue Book is now available for download. See below for details. For those wishing to learn more about the racing rules, join in the Midweek sessions starting at 1130 with our Rules Chairperson, Christina Heydon. These sessions are free and no bookings required.

Next Wednesday marks the start of the SoPYC Twilight Series. Please ensure that your boat is entered and eligible to race. It is requested that if you’re able to do so, download the Yacht Bot App so that Race Control is able to monitor your location live at all times particularly when it becomes very dark. The App can be downloaded on anyone’s device, not necessarily on the Skipper’s. To view the simple instructions – click here. This is not mandatory, only a request. You can even replay your race afterwards.

With the Twilight Series beginning in a few weeks, we are currently running a bit thin in the Start Box. If anyone can assist with flag signals, timekeeping or recording finish times, please contact the On Water Group office Email: . The series runs from November to March, 15 races in total and is held every Wednesday starting around 6pm. The team can run very easily with just 3 helpers alongside the Race Officer.

Details on the Marathon Races for Division 3 and the Red Witches are now available further down as well as a special invitation to S80 boat owners, both past and present to participate in this year’s S80 Legends Race.

GOOLUGATUP SAILING CARNIVAL – 04 TO 14 JAN 2021

With the unfortunate cancellation of the Australian Youth Championships due to COVID-19, SoPYC is announcing a special replacement event for Off The Beach classes on Melville Waters. A Preliminary Notice of Race is now available and entries are open. This event includes the State Championships for both the 29er and the Optimist classes. While national events are being cancelled or postponed left right and centre across the country and borders closed, rest assured there will opportunities to compete with some of the best right here at home.

As the name suggests, this will be more than just a sailing event. A variety of activities and attractions are planned around Coffee Point to keep the family entertained. Much more information will be forthcoming in due course. Please stay tuned!

Marathon Races

The Marathon Races for both Division 3 and Red Witch fleets are coming up soon. For either fleet, there is no additional nomination required. If your boat is already in the Saturday Series, your boat is already in the Marathon races. Click the button below for further information.

ORCV New Courses on Expedition

For those that would like to learn how to win ocean races, the ORCV has 2 new courses plus a Masterclass with Will Oxley. These courses concentrate of using Expedition Software starting with the very basics and building your knowledge.

In the basic course you will learn how to: set and manage marks and routes, creating race notes, uploading and working with charts, boat polars and sail charts with Expedition.

The second course, “You’ve got the basics. What’s next?”, builds your knowledge further in: how to work with weather routing, weather routes, wave polars and wave gribs, anaylsis of wind, current and MSLP and moves onto georeferencing weather images.

Will Oxley, is then running a Masterclass and discusses race planning, tactical boat positioning, how to evaluate GRIB data, communications and shares how he prepares and manages onboard whilst racing.

All courses run online and can be booked individually.
• Expedition, Learn the basics starts October 29 at 6 – 9 pm.
• Expedition, You’ve got the basics, what’s next? Is November 5, at 7 – 9 pm
• Masterclass with Will Oxley, starts Monday, November 9, 6.30 -9 pm and runs for 3 nights.

Equipment Audit Forms

Skippers, please note that your Equipment Audit Forms have now expired as of June 30. To be eligible to compete in the new season starting from Opening Day on Oct 4, a new Equipment Form must be submitted online. Most, if not all Skippers have had their previous Audit form submitted online via YachtSafe already, so it should be relatively easy to resubmit a new form in time for your first race of the new season and the good news is that you can view your previous form in Past Audits on your YachtSafe dashboard.

Yacht Trackers

The ability to replay club fleet races is now available. Try the free Yacht Bot tracking software yourself. It can be downloaded and installed on your smartphone or tablet via an App. If you interested and don’t mind taking your electronic device with you on the water, please let us know. Past races can be viewed using the button below.
