With the Opening Day clock reminding us that there are only 12 days to the start of the new sailing season, this is a good time to ensure your boat is eligible to race and entered in the events online. The Red Book, Keelboat Sailing Instructions and course sheets are available online. There will be some changes mentioned in the SIs, and to summarise what they are – please click here.
Despite the disappointing weather on Sunday, spirits were buoyed by a good turnout for the covid-delayed Keelboat Awards for the 2019-2020 season. The anticipated woo-harr party on the lawns outside became a much more civilised indoor affair.
Rick Steuart was the official photographer for the evening and you’ll notice his gallery on the right.

75th Anniversary Sailing Carnival – 04 to 14 Jan 2021
With the unfortunate cancellation of the Australian Youth Championships due to COVID-19, SoPYC is announcing a special replacement event for Off The Beach classes on Melville Waters. A Preliminary Notice of Race is now available and entries are open. This event includes the State Championships for both the 29er and the Optimist classes. While national events are being cancelled or postponed left right and centre across the country and borders closed, rest assured there will opportunities to compete with some of the best right here at home.
As the name suggests, this will be more than just a sailing event. A variety of activities and attractions are planned around Coffee Point to keep the family entertained. Much more information will be forthcoming in due course. Please stay tuned!

Racing Rules of Sailing
As a service to Members, National Judge Christina Heydon is running a series of evening education sessions at SoPYC on particular topics of interest relating to the new edition of the Racing Rules of Sailing that only recently were published by World Sailing. All sailors are welcome to attend and encouraged to bring along your questions and have them expertly answered. Next session will be held on Monday 05 October in the Ballroom.

Canning Bridge IGA Frostbite Series
Well wouldn’t you know it, the sunny spring weather snubbed us again and we copped another reminder of why this is called the Frostbite Series. With last Sunday’s race abandoned, we were left with only 5 completed races which barely gave us enough races to make the series and declare winners.
Thank you to everyone who participated through the last few months and once again it’s been a pleasure to have Canning Bridge IGA supporting us.
Series Winners 2020
Division 1 SP360 Slippery When Wet
Division 2 SP250 Fair Game
Division 3 SP777 San Michelle
Jane Brook Wines Midweek Winter Series
Only two more races remaining in this series and places are very tight at this point. The two Foundations are squabbling over equal points as are the two Cole 32s in Division 2. In the H28s nothing is certain at the top with Brain Cross’ Mariner snapping at the heals of Wynella. In C fleet Colin Delane can’t afford to relax just yet with the next two boats also on equal points and well within reach of the top spot. Time to get the popcorn out folks, this will be interesting.
If you haven’t already nominated for this event, feel free to do so using the Enter Event button below:

Equipment Audit Forms
Skippers, please note that your Equipment Audit Forms have now expired as of June 30. To be eligible to compete in the new season starting from Opening Day on Oct 4, a new Equipment Form must be submitted online. Most, if not all Skippers have had their previous Audit form submitted online via YachtSafe already, so it should be relatively easy to resubmit a new form in time for your first race of the new season and the good news is that you can view your previous form in Past Audits on your YachtSafe dashboard.
Yacht Trackers
On Water Group are trialing yacht tracking software that is capable of tracking all boats in an event via an App. We are looking for just a few boats to add to Keelboat racing, currently Midweek and Frostbite races. If you interested and don’t mind taking your electronic device with you on the water, please let us know. It is envisaged that every race can be viewed from the Club’s website and replayed at anytime.
I have a 16ft wooden catamaran that I understand is a “Quickcat” built from the original design developed by father and son team Charlie and Lindsay Cunningham. It is built entirely of wood with a wooden “trussed bridge” deck.
I purchased it some 50 years ago intending to restore it but only got part way through this intended project.
The yacht is in good condition having been stored for most of the time in the roof space of my car port.
The mast and sail (QB 988- the only identification on the boat) are also in good condition.
Whilst I have not been able to establish the full history of this yacht the “Quickcat” design has an interesting history.
Unfortunately I am unable to continue the restoration and would like to find a good home for the boat.
Boat is located in Kalamunda. Photo of boat – click here
