Laser Young Guns Seal the Deal
An emphatic two-zip victory over Guy Skinner’s Power Yacht Team resulted in the 2018 Little Wheel trophy going to Conor Nicholas and his Laser Young Guns in the twilight final on the Canning River near the Start Box. Light winds and current made crews work hard.
The winners did not have it all their own way early. Pre-start jousting began from the moment boats entered the starting area, the two skippers warily circling and trying to force an error from their opponent. The Power team’s neat manoeuver with 15 seconds to go in the first race left the Young Guns with nowhere to go and they bolted away for their moment of glory.
It lasted through to halfway down the first spinnaker leg, when the Young Guns’ superior boat speed closed the gap to very little and Team Power responded with a hard luff. In the gybe that followed, the Young Guns emerged in front but incurred a penalty in the process. At that point, it was all about boat speed. The Young Guns charged up the course for the second windward leg and opened up a big enough gap to clear their penalty while sailing to the top mark, whilst retaining their lead. Team Power could only follow the leader to finish a close second.
Race two was all over in less than a minute after the start. The two yachts began evenly off the line, but the Young Guns used their boat speed to draw away and keeping a loose cover on Team Power, maintained control throughout for the second win, thus securing the title.
