The afternoon began with the swirl of boats around the start line with boats trying not to get too far from the line. It was a nor easter after all and dodgy is a fine descriptor.

The smaller boats began with fine disregard for each other and as our turn arrived we found ourselves being pursued by a blue boat who had intentions on our lead. So we took him up.  But they had their revenge as did the rest of the boats out there as the H28’s were JaM racing on the day. So one by one, up went the spinnakers and off they went.  Yes it was a soft day and we could hold our own, but surely enough they just slipped away. Down and around Brickies A and B and set our goals on Dolphin West as one or two more boats moved past us.

But we had a chase of our own, to get past another H28 and for a while it was darned fine racing as we traded tack for tack up the breeze.  Finally we got past, but respect for the other skipper and his team. Nothing for free. So to Dolphin West and watch as some of the bigger boats began to pour past. We were way out the back. Still we had to get to Brickies A and B again and at least the breeze was holding. By this time we had plenty of time to enjoy the river and the thump, thump, thump of the party boats began to stand out as they shuffled their people up and down the river.

Around the top again and then up the breeze to Como with big zig-zag courses the order of the day. Looking back there was only a couple of smaller yachts, an H28 or two and ourselves. But there was a SS27 not too far from us, so we were happy.

Congratulations to Commodores Trophy winner, Naughty Black Shorts with Wendy Jorgensen taking the helm accompanied by a bunch of friends brought on board for the day. David Cowden took the family boat Ballina into second place with only 10 seconds difference and David Atkinson with back marker Tapestry was only 17 seconds after the Cowden driven boat. Good sailing for all.
