As part of the 75th Anniversary celebrations SoPYC is undertaking a project to build two St Ayles skiffs. The skiffs will be constructed by members through the Bosuns Club and participation is open to all interested members.

The St. Ayles skiff, 6.7m. in length and 1.7m. in width, is a bonded clinker, all water rowing boat for four rowers and cox and is based on a traditional Scottish design by expatriate Australian lain Oughtred. The base is a kit comprising laser cut planks and frames, all of which require scarfing and assembly. The rest of the wood, mainly Celery Top, for keel, hog, stems, gunwhales, seats, breast hooks and oars have to be sourced and constructed by volunteers.

The skiffs will be available to members to row for exercise and competitively against other river clubs who provide skiffs to their members. So, if you’d just like to keep fit, or participate in the occasional inter-club or even national or international competition, we encourage members to participate in a relaxed and friendly environment building the skiffs and rowing at the conclusion of the project.

Founding for the project will be tax deductable donations through the Australian Sports Foundation project set up for the purpose of providing two skiffs for member’s activities.
