RPYC Mini Series

Well done to our SoPYC sailors who competed in the RPYC Mini-Series regatta last weekend.  It was a challenging weekend for Race officers and Sailors with very light winds on both days, but in the end  a lot of classes ended up with 6 races.

SoPYC was well represented with a few notable mentions including

  • Otti Hori’s first-ever regatta in anything – competed in the Laser 4.7
  • Patrick Scally and Connor Shaw – 1st and 2nd in the Laser Standard
  • Annabelle Jones and Jenna Everett 1st in the 29er
  • Sam Williams and Jamie Randell 5th in their first regatta in this combination (Leading after day 1)
  • Ben Robinson winning overall Bic Techno Racing
  • Aaron Teo winning in the Bic Techno 6.8m in his first-ever windsurfing regatta
  • Murray Duthie and Noah Karantonis finishing 2nd and 4th in a close series with only 4 races completed
  • Mark Popham and John Hassen also tested out their skills in the Hansa 303 fleet
  • Murray Duthie received a special award for thanking all the female race officers for their great work and giving up their Mothers Day celebrations.  Well done Murray and all the Mothers for helping out  :)

WASS and WAIS Training Camps

Our strategic plan focuses on developing and retaining sailors.  In the keelboat scene, in addition to the Youth and Women’s Keelboat programs starting soon, we have an expanded program that allows our new course participants to gain more experience and skills after their initial course.  We want participants to embrace the sport and club.

In addition to some fantastic keelboat coaches, our members are also volunteering to support this program which is a nice mix of new and existing members sharing the passion of sailing.

The below flow chart explains graphically some of the pathways and options available for beginner keelboat sailors.
