WASS Camp

SoPYC hosted the winter WA Sailing Squad (WASS) camp on the weekend in conjunction with our regular training.  That meant 50 sailors plus the Applecross Cup Group 1 Fleet, so was a busy weekend.

Firstly, a huge thank you to Karen Lingard for running the canteen all by herself all weekend.  We need to change this over summer as it is too much for one person.  More to follow….

Also, a big thank you to the Commodore and Volunteer Bosuns who loaned their Shed for a meeting room and also help create a meeting room in the end shed.  These worked well.

The wind was very light all weekend but felt like summer patterns are not far away.

The 29ers worked a lot on Strategy and Trimming skills and kept score of the races.  Good to see an equal gender split in the fleet of 11 boats, including 1 470 campaigning mixed team.

The top girls team also came 2nd overall behind current under 17 boys World Champions.

Last I saw the Lasers were looking into many light air theory concepts  and boat handling skills.

The Foiling Windsurfers were practicing board handling skills and reviewing techniques and equipment from the recently run Foiling World Championships.

Westsail 2020

A reminder that Registrations are now open for Westsail and the WA Youth Championships.

Westsail is a four-day coaching clinic for youth sailors, which has been running in the first week of the September school holidays for over 30 years. Both participation and performance pathways operate at Westsail.

The annual WA Youth Championships complements individual Class championships and Club regattas, hosted at various times throughout the year.

Who can attend?

  • All sailors and classes to attend Westsail and the WA Youth Championships.
  • Westsail and the WA Youth Championships are youth events, therefore athletes must be under 23 years of age at 31 December 2020 to participate.
  • If a particular class is not listed in the dropdown menu on the registration form, simply select ‘Other’ and then type the name of the class in the text box below.

A minimum skill level is expected for Westsail and the WA Youth Championships. For South of Perth sailors, this generally means at least Gold and possibly Silver level, but check with your coach if your unsure of your suitability to attend
