I hope you are all well and healthy

COVID -19

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global problem and as you already know all activities at the club including training have been canceled.

Although this is disappointing, we all need to play our role in preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Coming together in groups even with excellent hygiene still risks spreading the virus and we simply don’t want to be contributing to the problem.

If you have any good online sailing games, please let me know on

Also if you want to discuss your sailing with me, please shot and email and I’ll see if I can help.

Last Sunday Training

Last weekend we tried a different format to test sailing in a more concise time with the Gold and Silver Opti training fleets starting training at 11:30 and going straight into racing with lunch on the water.

This was done for a few reasons including:

  • Less time overall to allow better concentration
  • More efficient time for families
  • We also ran a separate course to the more senior boats to have less waiting, more racing and courses more suited to the smaller boats.

Overwhelmingly we had really good feedback from the sailors, coaches, and families.  It’s something we can explore further.

Open Skiffs

Many of you may have seen the Clubs’ Open Skiffs after the main sailing session.  The Opti Gold and Pelican sailors tested them out with a bit of freestyle for a couple of hours.

The initial idea behind the club Open Skiff at SoPYC is part of our skill development and transition plans to make sure our young sailors are equipped with a sound and broad skill base to take on any class they choose going forward after their initial introduction to sailing.

(BTW How long does it take to rig an Open Skiff?  59 seconds so far)

Please do whatever you can to stay safe and healthy
