Sunday Learn to Sail

What a great turnout we had in the Learn to Sail program on Sunday morning.  We are getting close to capacity with our boats, which is a good problem to have.  Many of the sailors are very close and on track to graduate to the next level in two weeks, which allows a controlled and gradual growth at each stage.

Transition Skills

Last Tuesday we tested the Club 29er with the XS (extra small) rig and then Sunday had the Optimist Gold and Pelican sailors going through their initiation with onboard Coach Jack.

The plan for this squad is to help young sailors make the transition into more advanced boats easier. The boat and training will be available for Opti Gold and Pelican sailors. We plan to also sail Open Skiff’s and Windsurfers to further develop the skills needed to make well-rounded sailors.

The support of the SoPYC Grand Sponsors that make these types of opportunities possible is amazing and very much appreciated by all the sailors, families and coaches. It places SoPYC in an unique training position with great tools, great environment and club backing.

After the Transition session, the sailors came in with some of the biggest smiles I’ve seen and telling me how fast they were going (Close to 16 knots in only 12 knots of wind)  .. Pretty Cool.

We need some parent help as the coaches will most often be sailing with the sailors. So if you have your RST, First Aid and Working with Children Cards and are experienced sailors and boat drivers, please let me know. We want you involved.

Opti Gold Coach Nialls – Going Professional

Sadly we say goodbye to our Opti Gold Coach Niall Morrow this week as he embarks on a year of full-time professional sailing.  I’m sure all the sailors wish Nialls the best of luck on the World Match Racing Tour and possibly Sail GP.  Nialls has had great success with many sailors including the State Opti Champion Aeron Teo (Also 3rd Placed Nationals 2020) and Murray Duthie (1st Place Intermediate Nationals 2020).

Today is Niall’s last session but he will be back from time to time to share his adventures.

We have other top coaches including Rome Featherstone stepping into the role.
