51st Geraldton Ocean Classic Presentation Night

The SoPYC Wardroom saw a gathering of salty offshore sailors all keen to be part of the final leg presentations of the 51st Geraldton Ocean Classic Regatta – the notorious “Return Leg” and combined special awards.

With special guests GYC Commodore John Gummery and Dr Howard Gray (Author of “Spice at Any Price” – the life and times of Frederick de Houtman), Dr Howard had donated plaques and copies of his book to note the coming 400th anniversary for the discovery of the Abrolhos Islands.

Sailors and guests were treated to lovely food platters from F+B as they warmed up to the evening’s celebrations and swapped tales of yet another epic week of adventure and nautical fun. The MC for the evening was the effervescent Rear Commodore Simon Stone who kicked off events with a smile whilst handing the baton to Commodore John Midolo.

Following the pleasantries, John noted the conspicuous absence of Chris Higham – a long time anchor man of our Offshore Racing Committee and Geraldton Ocean Classic campaigner.   Chris was in Sydney training for the 75th Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, together with Paul Eldrid, bringing WA into the front-line on “Abbott’s Vamp” we hope!  – good luck guys.

Ocean Racing Captain Betty Walsh took the stage to thank the many sponsors, volunteers and competitors for their continued support of this iconic category 2 race which is the only WA qualifier for the Sydney to Hobart.

Betty then introduced “Mother” (Cherry Callcott) to award the Hoss Trophy to long-time volunteer sisters’ Julie Reeves and Sue Myles for their tireless contribution over many years.

Commodore John then returned to the stage to present the awards and congratulations to the fleet:
