About your boat & crew:

The SS22 is a beaut little boat, a bit like the VW Beetle car – small, simple, and rugged, but also performs well for its size.
Eutopia is a well founded and comfortable boat, having received two very “clean” marine surveys in the last 4 years, and is fitted out with all necessities for racing/cruising with a few extras, including 4 padded bunks, spirit stove, sink, ice-box, VHF radio and all safety gear (including PFDs, EPIRB, flares, and fire extinguishers).

Whilst the primary sailing activity is around-the-buoys racing on the Swan River in weekly Club events , we also compete against SS22s from other river clubs in the State Championships organised by the SS22 Association of WA. In addition, on one or two occasions during the summer season we hope to venture under the bridges at Fremantle to participate in some inshore races or regattas (e.g. Fremantle to Rockingham or Rottnest, Cockburn Sound Regatta).
To be competitive, and be able to competently handle a spinnaker, the SS22 requires a crew of four: helm/main-trimmer, two headsail/spinnaker trimmers, and a foredeck/bow person.

Skipper’s Experience: 15 years regular sailing at SoPYC as crew (all positions) on various keelboats (25 ft custom design, Herreshoff 28, Viper 640 Sportsboat, Farr 37, Farr 40, 50 ft Fife Linear Rater); 15 months owner-skipper of SS22 Eutopia.
I’m competitive – else why race? – and try to perform my best each race, but not at all costs! My first priority is to get both crew and boat back to the pen undamaged, followed by the fun/challenge of sailing, then competitive racing performance. I have no sheep station to gamble on the outcome of any race! 🙂

Recent results:
SoPYC C Fleet Midweek Winter Series 2020/21 – 1st overall (PHS)
SS22 Assoc. of WA – Most Improved Yacht 2019/20
SoPYC SS22 Consistency Series 2019/20 – 2nd overall (PHS)
SoPYC SS22 Club Championship 2019/20 – 3rd overall
SoPYC Billy Run to Rockingham C Fleet 2020 – 1st place (PHS)

What type of sailing do you do? Serious racing

What type of placement are you looking for? Permanent

Does this person need any special requirements?

Age and gender are no barrier.

I would prefer crew with sailing training &/or experience – especially for the bow as they must set up & handle the spinnaker – however I am willing to train anyone who demonstrates they are keen, prepared to put in the effort to learn, and as keelboat sailing is a team sport, will COMMIT to sailing most weeks of the season (of course with allowance for illness, unexpected emergencies, special events, etc.) If required, my current Midweek Sailing crew can provide testimonials as to my ability as a skipper and trainer.

Crewing on a small boat like the SS22 means that you will be actively involved in and learn much quicker most aspects of sailing and boat handling, whereas on a big yacht you will be a small cog in a big wheel and often spend much time just sitting on the rail as human ballast!
