Amazon takes out First place in CPYC State Heat 4

Another good result for SoPYC, winning the teams event and first and third places outright. Steve Wall and Amanda Watson on Amazon took out first and least points of 10 while John and Lynne Cooper on Purrfect taking out 3rd place with 12 points.

The course was brand new, starting at Applecross after which the fleet travelled into the stiff Souwester to Waterstrom, across to Deepwater and Lucky Bay, across and around the Claremont bank then back up the middle of the river to finish at Sampson and Heathcote.

The start team had checks at 14 marks which would have been uncomfortable for some in the blustery weather. Amazon’s open flybridge meant it was tough going on the leg to Waterstrom with the strong winds and stinging rain, freezing faces and fingers. A relief after rounding the Claremont bank marks, to see blue sky and a perfect rainbow ahead as we approached Pt Reso.

The mood on jetty 6 prior to the start was anxious with PC Guy Skinner down in amongst the electrics trying to tickle a response from Thanet and Amazon going nowhere with a jammed throttle cable. Luckily for Steve, the mechanic who’d worked on Amazon during the week, was available to sort his problem with 20 minutes to spare. Not so much luck for Guy with Thanet totally unresponsive, unfortunately, a last-minute withdrawal. Best wishes go to our VC Cookie who, due to a migraine I’m told, was also sadly a late withdrawal.

A total of 15 SoPYC boats competed in the event with Dave Millard on Jola taking first place (provisional) in our Club results, followed by Amazon and Purrfect.

State Heat results (Strudel) presentations at the host club Claremont Yacht Club, followed a delicious 3-course Asian style buffet banquet. CPYC Sponsor, Corrica Pastries again supplied a mountain of strudels which along with bottles of wine, were popular raffle prizes. Thank you, Brian and Tina Smith, for your hospitality & safely transporting us on Indiana. Check out Bernie’s photos of the presentations in the gallery below.

  • A reminder the next 2 weeks trophies honour great past members, Graeme Hood & Colin Wilson. Just 6 more consistency events left to round out our season, 2 of which are the doubleheader State Heats on 7th September and an event this year on Closing Day 28th September.

  • Rules: CPYC Pre Start practice run up protocol… the rules broadly state… no practice run-ups while start boat is anchoring, then 3 practice run-ups after the flags go up. Study up on the rules and know which flags to look out for before the back to back State Heat. Both are Course #10, with re-run starting at 10am at Burnside. Brrrrr
