Trophies, strudels and bell rings all round for our members  from South of  Perth Yacht Club on Friday evening, who cleaned up in the CPYC State Heat series, yet again. 285 boats representing Royal Freshwater Bay,  Royal Perth, Claremont and South of Perth Yacht Clubs competed with an average fleet of 36 boats in the 8 State Heats.

Congratulations to our teams of Amazon, Dalusional, Illusion, Indiana, M&M’s, Purrfect, Thanet and Tikkityboo for the great result of 78.75 points to win the Teams event from Royal Freshwater Bay 164.75pts , Claremont 249.5 points and 4th place Royal Perth Yacht Club with 258 points. The team results shows the depth of talent.  Tikkityboo Skipper Jason Claricoates with his navigator and wife Caroline James, were thrilled to be awarded the 2021 Season Consistency Trophy for the best result over of 6 of the 8 events with a score of 32.7 in only their 3rd season of competition.

The stand out South of Perth Yacht Club team was undoubtably Amazon, skippered by Steve Wall and navigator Amanda Watson,  who won the award for Champion Boat for a record 5th year for best 5 placed fleet positions of the 8 events. Their score was a mere 1.5 points due to winning 4 of the events outright and sharing the 5th win with Thanet. Last years defending champion, Thanet, skippered by Guy Skinner and navigated by Richard Evans and Ann McClusky, were second on 19.75 points and Sansterre skippered by Chas Milner from Claremont in 3rd place with 29.6.

Steve Wall follows in the footsteps of his father, the late, great Jim Wall,  who was the first SoPYC skipper to win the State Heat Time Trialling Champions Trophy on his boat Skittles in 1984… 37 years ago!  Keeping another tradition alive, it was Steve’s mother,  Dawn Wall, who introduced the “kitchen clock” method of time keeping to the crew,  which navigator Amanda Watson still uses.
