Message from the Commodore

Dear Members,

I am writing to inform you that Ralph Newton, who was elected to the Management Committee at the AGM on Wednesday evening, advised me on Thursday 6th September that he is resigning from the Management Committee with immediate effect. I have reluctantly accepted his resignation. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Ralph for his contribution to SoPYC while a Flag Officer of the Club. His resignation has created a casual vacancy within the Management Committee that needs to be filled. Having allocated the portfolio positions to the elected committee members last night, the position of Functions Chairman remains vacant. The Management Committee can select Members from the Club to fill any casual vacancy that exists within the committee however, the committee resolved last night to invite Members who may have suitable experience to fulfil this role to indicate their interest in joining the committee. Please would interested Members email an expression of interest in fulfilling the role of Functions Chairman to the General Manager (general.manager@sopyc.com.au ) by Friday 14th September.

Phil Warwick,

SoPYC's On Water Manager nominated as a Team Official (Coach) by the German Olympic Committee to prepare and manage German Youth Olympic Sailors

Buenos_Aires_Youth_Olympics_2018.svg
The 2018 Youth Olympic Games will be hosted in Buenos Aires, Argentina 3 - 18th October 2018. The event is a magnificent display of youth sport at the absolute highest level.
The International Olympic Committee and the Argentinian Olympic Committee have designed an amazing educational program leading up to the games which last two weeks. The recently built Olympic Village is ready to host all participants and support staff in true Olympic style. As a snapshot of the games there are: 32 sports in 286 adrenaline filled sessions; 1250 Youth Olympic medallists; approximately 4500 athletes; more than 2000 coaches and team officials; and 206 countries participating in 4 Olympic Parks hosting the sporting events.

Mikael has been selected by the German Olympic Committee as a Team Official (Coach) and invited to prepare and manage the sailors competing in the windsurfing (boys and girls) kitesurfing (boys and girls) and coaching the Nacra 15 mixed sailors participating in the games. SoPYC’s Management Committee is delighted to support Mikael in his attendance at the Youth Olympics which he is doing in his own time, taking annual leave from the Club. Mikael has been involved in the preparation of athletes for the 2000, 2004 and 2012 Olympic Games and describes his selection as a “humbling experience to be selected to prepare and support athletes at a major event like the Youth Olympics. The Games are a major milestone for all participants and support staff. I’m extremely grateful to be able to pursue this challenge and I am very grateful to the SoPYC for their support in allowing me to accept the invitation”. Mikael believes his selection and participation is a testament to the vision, aspirations, determination and results that South of Perth Yacht Club has produced. SoPYC is on the world map with Mikael’s selection as an official with the German Olympic Team and Head Coach, Tessa Parkinson’s selection to coach at the World Youth Sailing Championship and winning medals for Australia in Texas earlier this year. These appointments demonstrate the skills, knowledge and expertise these staff bring to SoPYC and exhibits the Clubs approach to sailing and the Club’s collective spirit toward the sport.

Mikael and Tessa will be delighted to share their experiences of the World Youth Sailing Championships and Youth Olympics what this means to their ability to support all levels of sailing and sailors at SoPYC.
