Vale Bruce Stocker
Dear Members and Friends,
It is with regret that we advise members that Bruce Stocker passed away this morning succumbing unexpectedly quickly to cancer.
Bruce was actively involved in powerboat activities and as Principal Dealer of Parkland Mazda sponsored junior sailing and special events conducted by the Club for many years. His legacy of support and sponsorship is continued by Parkland Mazda today. In recent years, as a resident of Mandurah, Bruce has enjoyed the benefits of MOFSC.
On behalf of the Flag Officers and Members, we would like to extend our condolences to his family.

New Annual Voucher Option
The Management Committee has resolved to introduce an annual payment for the House Support Scheme (vouchers) to accommodate members who are absent from the Club for work or travel purposes for extended periods. With the introduction of this option, exemptions from voucher charges will no longer be available as members opting to pay their vouchers annually will have a full twelve months to use their vouchers.
To accommodate this new arrangement for the new 2018-19 financial year, members must register their intention to take up this offer by no later than 1 August 2018. This will be an annual “opt-in” option and from 2019 the option will be processed at the same time as the standard quarterly vouchers on the 30th June each year.
The applicable membership categories are:
- Centreboard 26 years+
- Family
- Ordinary 26 years+
- Ordinary Half
- Social
For members exercising the option, $460 (4 x $115) will be charged on the 1st August and the vouchers will expire on 30 June the following year. The annual voucher option will not be available for use until they are fully paid.
Any quarterly vouchers charged on 30 June 2018 prior to the new option being taken up will be credited back (less amounts spent) to the member's account.

Jetty Safety
As part of the pens and mooring rules of the Club, no vessel is permitted to have any part of the vessel overhanging the main walkway. This rule is in place for good reason: to avoid any injury to members walking along the jetty. Regrettably, last Sunday a four-year-old child banged her head on the bowsprit of a vessel that was overhanging the main jetty walkway. While no significant injury was sustained the girl was distraught and her parents were understandably distressed and upset. The cause of the accident was a person, believed to be a member or associated with a member, riding a bicycle along the jetty causing the child, who was walking down the middle of the jetty, to jump aside from the path of the cyclist and bang her head on the bowsprit. The cyclist did not stop or approach the family to see what hurt may have been caused to the child as a result of their irresponsible behaviour. This is unacceptable by any measure. From a safety standpoint alone, bicycles shall not be ridden along jetties at any time for any purpose. The cyclist and boat owner may be liable for any claim relating to the injury caused to a member, guest or staff member as a consequence of non-compliance of the rules. A cyclist may also be subject to a liability claim as a consequence of the action of riding a bicycle along what is fundamentally a footpath with pedestrians having a right of way. Please would all boat-owning members check that they have their vessels correctly positioned in pens and would all members note that bicycles are not permitted to be ridden on any Club jetty. Letters go out regularly to boat owners about overhanging boat fixtures and hopefully this incident will highlight the importance of compliance.

Last Saturday was another picture perfect winter’s day, with a light breeze and bright sunshine bringing out not just a good fleet of time triallers, but also many yachties keen to exploit the beautiful weather on the Swan. It was hardly a surprise then, that no less than nine boats returned single-digit scores ”off the stick”, indicating the extraordinary talent …

Last Sunday was race 4 of this event and the conditions were significantly different from what we’ve become accustomed to. We were greeted with warm gusty northerlies with sunny conditions all day to top it off. Winds began in the high teens but soon eased off but not before some boats skilfully hoisted a kite on a shy reach. Didn’t …

Cruising Section - Lunching at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club 18 June
What a great way to spend a Sunday – lunching at Royal Freshies last Sunday, 18 June! The weather was beautiful and made more enjoyable by being able to sit outside and enjoy the spectacular view and sunshine.
Some of us drove there and others came on Sovereign Eight with Dave and Marilyn Barton. 15 of us sat down to a lovely lunch and the odd glass or two of wine!
After lunch, some of us who drove went and had coffee or wine on board with Dave and Marilyn and enjoyed their hospitality. It was good to see some “new” faces at our monthly event.
A big thank you goes to Daniel Shields for organising this luncheon and to Dave and Marilyn for generously providing Sovereign Eight as our “chauffeur” driven, stylish transport. We would also like to acknowledge the warm hospitality of RFBYC who made us feel very welcome and who were very accommodating in providing mooring space for us to bring our boats over if we wished.
Again thank you to our Cruising In Company Committee who have organised another great social event for ALL the South of Perth Yacht Club members to come and enjoy. It is always good to be able to go to other clubs and enjoy their hospitality. This is what the Cruising In Company section is all about, getting our members together to enjoy a wonderful day out at different venues.
We usually hold our events on the 3rd Sunday of each month. Read your “Coffee Pointers” to check out our next event.
