Highway to Hell- Important Long Weekend Road Closure Information

Highway to Hell is being staged along the Canning Highway on 1 March 2020 3pm-9.30pm, in partnership with the City of Melville, City of Fremantle and Town of East Fremantle.

Highway to Hell is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for residents to ‘reclaim’ the Canning Highway for a day of live performances and other exciting and family-friendly activities. Taking inspiration from the AC/DC song of the same name, Highway to Hell will involve closing a 10km stretch of the Canning Highway from Canning Bridge in Applecross to Queen Victoria St in Fremantle (the old traffic bridge) to create the world’s longest stage and Perth’s playground for a day.

Canning Highway from Canning Bridge, Applecross to Queen Victoria Street, Fremantle and one block back along the route will be closed to traffic from 1pm and will reopen in sections by 11pm. Leach Highway and South Street will remain open.

Key crossroads at Reynolds Street, Riseley Street, Stock Road and Petra Street will remain open for the duration of the event, allowing traffic to flow south/north across Canning Highway.

Stirling Highway and Queen Victoria Street traffic bridges will remain open for the duration of the event, allowing traffic to flow south/north across the bridges.

Access to Kintail Road to Canning Bridge freeway north entrance will remain open for the duration of the event, allowing traffic to flow to freeway north.

Plastic Statistics

It’s estimated that 630 million kilos of trash enters the ocean each year alone. Plastic pollution alone is estimated to affect at least 267 species worldwide, with 86 percent of sea turtle, 44 percent of seabird, and 43 percent of marine mammal species impacted. Plastic debris most commonly impacts marine life through ingestion of plastic, or entanglement within the plastic itself. Not only are these numbers astounding in the threat they pose to marine life with species endangerment and extinction levels on the rise, but there is also a noteworthy impact to humans. Over one third of waters where shellfish are grown for human consumption are negatively impacted by coastal pollution.

• A straw is used for an average of 20 minutes but hangs around for a further 600 years.
• 73 percent of beach litter is plastic: filters from cigarette butts, bottles, bottle caps, food wrappers, grocery bags, and polystyrene containers.
• Nearly a million plastic beverage bottles are sold every minute.
• Some 700 species of marine animals have been reported so far to have eaten or become entangled in plastic.

Twilight Time Trialling for Valentines at RFBYC

Three boats from SoPYC enjoyed a warm balmy evening Time trial followed by a delicious BBQ and fabulous romantic lawnside entertainment at RFBYC. The event wasn’t really for the guns with only 4 checked marks and some questionable scores by the visiting teams.

It was a bittersweet swan song for Chilly Mussel the Riv 40, with the exciting news Steve and Julie Leech have done a deal on a new Riv. Rumour is it will also be christened Chilly Mussel.

Team Dalusional skipper Troy and navigator “TBA” turned out to be Dad, PC Frank Dalglish. Troy has a selection of navigators this season.

Garry and Amanda trialled on Lone Star as a last chance before Garry heads to Mexico next Thursday to cruise back across the pacific with Brett and Dilana on SV Bula. Once they leave Mexico, Bula’s first landfall is the Marquese Islands about 30 days sailing . Hope he’s packed the seasickness pills.

Back on the river after a couple of weeks sailing in the lumpy stuff and 15(ish) knots of south-westerly was just what the doctor ordered for those that needed a bit of reaching under spinnaker practice. Continuing their good form from the Nationals, Rookie and Paul (Flashpoint) established an early lead in the first race to take the chocolates from John and Kevin (Final fifteen says she) and Greg and Mike (The Answer). The second race saw Greg and Mike get the gun from Rookie and Paul with the curry-fueled team of Sandy and the other Greg (Fly in the ointment) third.
Slip of the day goes to Rear Commodore Stone with a less than graceful dismount from Final Fling upon returning to shore which might have had him hearing a bell ring if his ears weren’t so full of the Swan River !
Our annual curry night was held on Saturday night with great food, great company, great location and great support from our Food and Beverage people. Thanks to all concerned.

Two more Club Championship heats next week and don’t forget to book for the Worlds fundraiser on March the 6th-

Rottnest Island Fuel Jetty

It’s been another busy summer on Rottnest, with record numbers of people enjoying our wonderful Island.

With increasing visitor numbers, the Rottnest Island Authority is committed to ensuring all facilities are supporting this growth.

As part of State Government funding, the $3 million redevelopment of Rottnest Island’s Fuel Jetty is underway, with tenders for its demolition and reconstruction being sought.

The new jetty will offer many benefits to the Island, including a new deck, additional power and water facilities, new finger jetties, improved refuelling/berthing for smaller vessels and an extended end platform. More details can be found at

Demolition and construction is due to begin in April 2020.

I wanted to write and inform your club and your members that during the demolition and reconstruction period, there will be disruptions and inconvenience for people who use the Fuel Jetty. In most cases, boat owners will need to make alternative arrangements.

If you have any queries or are seeking more information about the Fuel Jetty project, please contact our Communication and Media Manager Kent Acott on 0419 942 278 or at
