Dark Side Trophy 5 May 2018

Come on you yachties! Just for one day, take a walk on the Dark Side!

For those in the know, the Dark Side Trophy is awarded to the best performing yacht in the Opening Day Time Trial. Yachts which normally traverse the Swan River under sail, take part in the time trial under motor, most selecting a speed of either 5 or 6 knots for the day – well within the capability of most yachts. Shades, Theophis and Windjana are just some of the yachts who have tried their hand at the not so subtle art of time trialling, with varying degrees of success but all reported thoroughly enjoying the change.

It would be great if the sailing fraternity took up the once a year Dark Side challenge.
The mechanics are simple. The Club will provide each yacht with a temporary competition number for the day, a course sheet and even a mud map to illustrate the course. Each boat needs a skipper, a navigator and a clock capable of showing seconds as well as hours and minutes. Many use the traditional kitchen style clock with a big sweep second hand, while others prefer digital clocks or watches. The aim of the contest is simple. You are given a set course and a sheet which sets out the times from mark to mark. After being allocated your start time, it is a simple matter to calculate the actual time of arrival at each mark of the course – the skill lies in the skipper’s ability to judge his speed to arrive at precisely the right moment. Every second early or late will cost the boat one point. Time trials are a fun way of doing something different with your sailboat. Go on – take the challenge and be one of the 2018 contenders for the DARK SIDE TROPHY!

Feedback sought to plot future of local nautical chart program - Due by May 18th

chart
Dear Marine Safety Partner,
Skippers and other enthusiasts who use Department of Transport (DoT) nautical charts are being asked for feedback to determine the future of the service. A review of the production and distribution of nautical charts is occurring to provide a plan that will best meet the future needs of the State’s boating community.

Skippers have always been able to access DoT produced nautical charts in a paper format. However, Royal Australian Navy chart production, advances in technology and the growing popularity of electronic navigation systems on vessels and other digital platforms have prompted a review.

Currently, DoT produced nautical charts of the WA coastline are available for free download to skippers (https://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/nautical-charts.asp) and the agency’s valuable data is also used by a number of chart plotter distributors under a licence agreement. As part of the review DoT will gauge the value of DoT’s chart production program, consider provision of charts in other digital formats, including those available for free download and investigate current and future partnership opportunities across Government and with the private sector.

Participate in the review by visiting www.transport.wa.gov.au/nauticalchartsurvey until May 18, 2018.

Flying Fifteen Club Update

Season 2017-18 certainly finished with a rush with the occasional squall at the upper limit for some classes but some beautiful sailing conditions between the rain clouds. At the end of the day, the most important things were that the beer was cold and the showers hot.
Janet Jerwood avoided the crew’s race last week but still had to singlehandedly take the helm of Ineffable, douse the spinnaker and sail back to pick up her wet and embarrassed husband. Tim and Plonky took advantage of the situation to win the first race and seal the Club Championship.
Andrew Knowles (A2) left the injured Anne on the beach in favour of Matt Summers (40kgs heavier and a half metre taller) to win the second race by a minute from Ineffable.
On days like that our thanks, in particular, go to the dedicated crews of our rescue boats. We, the Flying Fifteens, didn’t need your help on the day but very reassuring to know you are there and help is available.

50th Geraldton Ocean Classic - 20 October 2018

Exciting news from over East! The Fremantle to Geraldton Yacht Race in its current format (cat 2 and held in the six months prior to the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race) is now recognised as an official qualifying race for this year's Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and will be listed in their NOR this year.
