2018 Foundation Youth Cup

Sunday, 18th March 2018
Hosted by South of Perth Yacht Club

South of Perth Yacht Club, ably led by Race Officer Les Swinton, conducted a terrific event on Sunday in Melville waters east. With a 5-10 knot southeasterly, conditions were challenging for the young competitors.

Event Ambassador, Cam Seagreen, the reigning World Match Racing Champion, kicked off proceedings with a chat about working not only with competitors' individual teams but respecting the collective youth community. He highlighted that growth as a collective is what will lead to success at the highest level in sailing.

Jury Chairman, Christina Heydon, gave a graphic display regarding “Appendix A” on water umpiring which was well received by the competitors and led to zero damage or collisions on the day!

Six clubs were represented across 9 teams. Race wins went to Fremantle Sailing Club’s Alistair Young, South of Perth Yacht Club’s Conor Nicholas and Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club’s Ethan Prieto-Low. Fremantle Sailing Club’s
all female team, skippered by Monique DeVries, impressed with a 6th place overall for the day and hot on her heels was East Fremantle Yacht Club's female-helmed team; 7th overall with Chloe Back.

Ultimately the overall championship was won by South of Perth Yacht Club's team of Conor Nicholas, Richard Maher, Lachy Gilham, Matt Linguard, Niall Morrow, Finn O'dea, Emila Horn and Matt Selby coached by Tessa Parkinson. RFBYC and FSC rounded out the minor placings.

Swan River Sailing would like to thank all the observers, coaches and administrators who coordinated to get the youths to the start line. South of Perth Yacht Club, Jury members Christina Heydon and Richard Goldsmith, Vice Commodore David Barton, Mark Layers, Gary Lingard and Bob Kelliher, Race Committee, Les Swinton, John Rooke, Rose Middolo and Phil Lammonby, Swan Rivers Sailing's Maintenance Manager Michael Taylor, and Event Ambassador, Cam Seagreen, for the support they have shown towards the event.

Looking forward to seeing the teams back again next year and all those competing in the 2018 Inter Club Championships, being held 13 - 15 April 2018 at Royal Perth Yacht Club.

Warm Regards
Andy Fethers, Regatta Chairman, Swan River Sailing

Xantippe Night Time Trial Results

Friday 9 March

Xantippe winners cropjpeg
The banner behind the podium is still correct, the first Time Trailing event in 2018, the Xantippe is in fact, the last of the 2017 season, strange as this may seem!

A challenge for the most experienced of Time Trial-ers to navigate the course in pitch darkness. Now that spit posts are lit with red or green navigational marks, it makes them easier to spot but harder to judge the distance, according to some skippers. This would account for whispers from Cookie on Check Point duty at Applecross about "possible" changes of speed. The spotter holding the torch on the foredeck to light the marks is the most important crew member on the boat and often the one who deserves the drink for being the wettest on return to the pen.

Eleven boats started the 8 knot 55 minute course from 1930hrs, with the experienced Troy Dalglish and Dee Kelly on Dalusional taking 3rd on countback, and Brett Morrison and Dilana Ramirez on Sunhunter 2nd, each losing 8 points and Steve Wall and Amanda Watson on Amazon ( pictured) taking out the trophy with 5 points lost.

Upcoming Events:
Power Section will be "firing up" by end of April with the Pre-Season Cocktail Party on Friday 27th April followed the same weekend on Sunday 29th April Theory and Practical Training session with Troy. Power Yacht Opening Day is Saturday, May 5th.

Cruising Butterflies: Sunday 8th April 8.30am
I urge you to please support the Cruising Section by nominating with Bert to host Kalparin Families for their annual Cruising Butterflies event on Sunday morning 8th April. Bert is urgently wanting more boats to host sick kids and their families for a 2 hour Swan River cruise and dolphin watch, followed by BBQ lunch provided by the Club. Ladies Lunch Group are seeking volunteer helpers for before the cruise to register and match the families with skippers.

Offshore Report 18 March 2018

It seems just a short while ago that we were wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, but this Saturday is the 9th race of the offshore season since Christmas. Having put the 3 Ports Race away in late January we have had a hectic February with the Pot Of Gold weekender at Hillary’s, the back end of the Northern Regatta IRC Championships with the Around the Sound Race and the ill-fated Bunbury. We have then kicked into March with the festive Mandurah weekender and now the West Coaster race to Lancelin and back.

We are now also beginning to see some series close off as the end of the season nears. The Around the Sound weekend closed off the Northern Regatta IRC Championships with Chris Higham’s ARGO winning over Anthony Kirk’s Enterprise and Mark Nagle’s Weapon of Choice in Division one and Dennis Vincent’s Wyuna winning over Michael Thorpe’s S&S 34 Soon and Bill Henson’s Circa. That weekend also saw the SoPYC Offshore Cup with ARGO winning over Dirty Deeds and Enterprise on IRC while The Deeds and Enterprise swapped places on YAH. In Division two Peter Vlaar’s Farrago saw off Ryan Binedell’s double hander Low Flying Duck and Brian Thurston’s This Way Up in both IRC and YAH.
The Bunbury race completed the Farrawa Cup Series, which saw ARGO win over Alan Stein’s Dirty Deeds and Gary McNally’s Black Betty overall (and Division one) with Ian Clyne dislodging Black Betty for the 3rd on YAH while Circa won over Soon and Scott Glaskin’s Cougar in Division two IRC and Andrew Walby in the old familiar S & S 34 Swagman managed to dislodge Cougar for the 3rd on YAH.
The Mandurah weekender finished the 6 race Weekender Series and saw Paul Arns’ Obsession beat ARGO in a count back for 1st with Dirty Deeds picking up 3rd after scoring a couple of bullets for the both legs of the Mandurah races for Division one while ARGO managed to hang onto the YAH result from Weapon Of Choice and Obsession. In Division two it was Wyuna, Circa and Laurie Flynn’s Dynamic on the podium with Circa knocking off Soon and Wyuna on YAH.

This weekends West Coaster Race will decide the FSC Success Cup with ARGO taking in a 2 point lead over Obsession on IRC while Nicholas White only has to get to the start line to see Wasabi home on YAH. In division 2 Dynamic takes a count back advantage over equal point holder Circa on IRC while Soon holds a one-point lead over Circa on YAH. The race on Saturday will enjoy some close racing for high stakes!

Views from the Beach
As the offshore racing community continues to reach out to the broader community, close racing along our populated coastlines has been a feature that has been growing over the years. Races such as the Pot Of Gold take the fleet past the densely populated beaches of Scarborough, while the Rockingham races have always featured a flypast of the popular Rockingham beach front and sailors have been known to develop a squint while rounding Campbell Mark off Swanbourne Beach. What a special sight the fleet can be to the casual passerby. SoPYC’s Geraldton race traditionally starts with the fleet well out of sight to round Rottnest but there is a whisper that a course keeping the fleet close to the coast until Hillary’s may be in the offing. This year you may want to park up on the North Mole for the start and then chase the fleet up the coast with your beach chair in the boot stopping by to your favourite lookouts along the way to see off the intrepid sailors this time around.

The Geraldton
Speaking of the Gero, the entry portal opened last week and Mike Giles’s Endorphin pipped ARGO at the post to be the first entry and claim bragging rights over what is expected to be a solid fleet of stalwarts.

Love is in the Wind
The offshore glitterati was out in force on Sunday to see Chris Hind tie the knot with Anni Hodgkinson to formally unite two of SoPYC powerhouse sailing families. Having met on Farrago and settled into Sagacious IV they remain represented in a variety of fleets on the river and offshore. Well done and Congrats to you both!!

Happy Easter from your Offshore Scribe!

Flying Fifteen Update

A beautiful day for any sort of sailing and some long legs so we got to see sections of the river that we don’t normally visit. Greg and Lillo ( Spot the difference) got the best of the start and were never headed to be fastest followed by John and Matt ( Ffast Lane 4) and Tim and Plonky ( Ffollow Us). Peter and Past Commodore Phil were consistency winners in Swifft.
Great to see Mark and Katharine put Wildffing through its paces for their first race of the season, Jen and Adam have the new rig in Yes,No,Maybe and Jeff Vance creating some confusion by being the other fluro kite in the other Ffast Lane.
It’s only a week and a half before the State Championships and the first key date for most people expecting to compete for the championship is Friday the 23rd ( that’s this Friday). Entries for this event need to be submitted by this date if you prefer to avoid the dreaded late fee.
Any readers of this column who fancy being involved in this event, either as a helper or a competitor, should contact Fleet Captain Tim Bussemaker to be aimed in the relevant direction.
A welcome return to multiple races for next Sunday at the usual time of 1325hrs.
FLYING 15 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 30 March to 1 April 2018
The 57th F1x5 State Championship will be raced at SoPYC over the Easter long weekend 30 March to 1 April.
Further details will be provided very soon. Volunteers can sign up by CLICKING HERE
Curtin University Student - Request of our Members

My name is Lucy-Rua Kelsch, and I am one of five students working on a group presentation. We are currently studying at Curtin University, in our first year studying Occupational therapy. We have a group assignment where we have to go out into our community to interview a few people participating in the occupation of water-based activities. We were inquiring to see if we would be able to visit your sailing club, to conduct our interview.
For our assignment, we are required to interview two individuals for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, at a time of their convenience, who are your club members and also enjoy participating in the occupation of Sailing on a regular basis. The interview would consist of around 30 to 40 questions about the individual's experiences with sailing.
We would like the opportunity to watch the individuals also participate in some sailing, in hope that we are also able to incorporate some photographs and video's of them sailing from first-hand experience, into our presentation.
We are required to have a signed consent form from the individuals who are willing to participate in our photographs and videos, which we will supply.
If it is also made possible, would one of our group members be able to participate in the sailing with one of your experienced individuals?
If this is agreeable to your sailing club, would you please be able to supply us with some suitable dates and times that we are able to conduct our interview.
If there are any further questions, please contact me by email on or by mobile number: 0499046177
Kind regards
Lucy-Rua Kelsch
