Everyone expected something special from the Golden Anniversary of the Club’s signature ocean race and we certainly weren’t disappointed! The Geraldton Ocean Classic was much lighter than expected – so much so that competitors agreed at the briefing to sail a shorter course by taking the Rottnest Island rounding out. It turned out to be a very good move, allowing …

Difficult to imagine conditions any better for sailing than on Sunday. So good, in fact, that RO Les threw in an extra race to take full advantage of a moderate westerly in a near vacant river. As a result, there are lots of results that are better viewed at www.sopyc.com.au .
It must have been international visitor day as we had Andrew Knowles’ parents from Scotland watching from the starting boat as Andrew and Anne won two of the races. Hector, who normally crews for Greg on Spot the difference took the week off and had his mum, Pascale Paturau, who is visiting from Mauritius, take over the crewing duties. Pascale is no stranger to Flying Fifteens having been instrumental in establishing the fleet in Mauritius.
Plenty on the program for next weekend starting with windward/leeward races on Saturday on Melville Water West with the Freshie fleet and then back to our end of the river on Sunday starting at the normal time.

Survey - Aquatrash – Protecting the Marine Environment
The Aquatrash barge operates over the peak Christmas and New Year period to provide extra rubbish removal from bays around Rottnest Island that Programmed Facility Maintenance provide to the boating community. As you can imagine, keeping the pristine waters off Rottnest free from rubbish and pollution is a critical issue that most people unanimously agree upon. A survey will be placed in the OWG foyer from tomorrow to collect as many signatures as possible to support this valuable service as there is a planned diminish of this service in the near future. If you do not wish to put a contact number on the survey, please list that you are a member at SoPYC or other.
The survey will remain in the foyer until the middle of November and then will be submitted to the Rottnest Island Authority Board by barge operators Commercial Maritime.
Thank you for your assistance in raising the awareness amongst the boating community and the general public. Should you require any further information on this please contact Tina Smith at tina.brian@bigpond.com

Duyfken Line Catchers and Ship Keepers Needed!
Here is your opportunity to take an active role on the Duyfken.
After each of the Duyfken twilight sails we need to roster a Line Catcher to help secure the ship back against the berth. It's just a matter of catching a heaving line and then placing the mooring lines on a bollard or timber chaffer.
Here are the November dates where we are looking for help.
Twilight Sailing Dates- November 2nd, 3 ,4 , 9, 10,11,16,17,18, 23, 24 & 25th 2018.
This involves being on the jetty from 6.45pm awaiting Duyfken’s return to berth. Usually wrapped up by 7.15pm.
Ideally we like to have a ship keeper aboard Duyfken each night of the week. During the summer this can be a most rewarding experience – dinner on the deck watching a beautiful sunset. On twilight sailing days the ship keeper could also serve as the line-catcher.
