Another perfect day for time trials last Saturday saw a healthy fleet of thirty-three power boats competing, with mixed success. It was a heartwarming response to the sport, with a number of competitors missing from the fleet to attend Mark and Jared’s wedding at Rottnest Island. Domini Coyle and Rob Perks became the fourth newcomer to join the fleet this …

Denis Jones joins SoPYC as Head Coach
Denis has spent a life time on the water with extensive experience as a competitive sailor and passionate coach across many codes of the sport from beginners to youth sailors, skiff sailing, match racing, foiling, windsurfing and Americas Cup.
Close to home Denis won his first National Championship at SoPYC in the Flying Ant class and went on with a passion in the sport to springboard into success including junior titles in four different classes for another five years culminating in three Youth World selections and two Podium results.
After just missing Olympic selection in 1984, still as a junior, Denis went on to sail in the America’s Cup as one of the youngest ever sailors at 19 and later moved into 49ers.
Mixing work as an Engineer and sailing, it was back to the Americas Cup and Olympic coaching with the USA team which brought home a Bronze and Silver medal as part of the strongest sailing nation, at that time, over two Olympics cycles.
Always wanting to pass on knowledge to younger WA sailors, Denis has coached many young sailors to National titles and Youth Worlds selection and was specifically involved with coaching Elise Rechici and Tessa Parkinson to multiple Youth Worlds and Open World titles and then as a mentor for their Olympic Gold medal
Denis has always coached and competed and has over fifteen National Titles and many World Title top five places in a range of classes including 420, 470, 49er, Musto Skiff, Etchells, International 14’s, Viper 640.
In the current Olympic squad, Denis was engaged as the 49er Australian coach in 2017 which included Australia’s best ever 49er squad result with five podium results.
Recently Denis coached the Open Bic WA team for the last World Championship and is currently the WA WAIS and WASS skiff coach concentrating on the 29er.
We look forward to welcoming Denis to his new role at the Club on Thursday 30th May.
“I have coached many champions and worked and raced with and against some of the best in the business. My focus has always been on skill development and not really worrying about results. They have a way of looking after themselves. I am most proud of helping sailors who have become great ambassadors of the sport with or without results and pass on the love of the sport.
Some say that sailing is dwindling, but I haven’t seen that. There are many success stories and SoPYC has started rejuvenating their program with a good process. When I look at young sailors it is scary how good they are getting in the various craft that are on offer. The future options for boats that fly on foils has very exciting opportunities for the future of our members and WA sailors as we have one of the best venues in the world.
What a place to grow your sailing skills.
I look forward to working with SoPYC and the future of coaching opportunities at the club.”

SoPYC has utilised an online volunteer roster for the past 2 years and now intend to expand its scope to include the Centreboard Galley, Support Duty (Yachting events) and Checkpoint Duty (Time Trials) rosters. The main benefit to Club Members is that the latest information is always accessible and interactive. This will be implemented over the next few months in stages allowing plenty of time for further information to be provided to Members. The roster can be accessed via the Volunteer webpage. If Members wish, they can create a profile now or one will be created for you in due course.
