Disposal of unserviceable flares - temporarily unavailable at DoT offices
Due to difficulties with a Department of Transport (DoT) contractor engaged to dispose of expired flares, DoT is unfortunately temporarily unable to accept flares for disposal. Until these issues are resolved please keep your flares in a safe and secure location or dispose of your flares at one of the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA) centres listed at the following website http://walga.asn.au/.
Please do not discard unserviceable flares in general rubbish or landfill. Up to 10 flares may still be disposed of at the participating Household Hazardous Waste Program centres provided by the WALGA or Volunteer Marine Rescue groups.

Flying Fifteen Update
A gusty easterly must be a race officer’s nightmare with the risk of a course destroying gust always looming. It does present some great opportunities to gain and lose ground during the race and tales of what might have been, were recounted at a couple of long tables in the clubhouse over dinner. Nic and Janet (Ineffable) did more gaining than most to win both races by large margins. This left a tight bunch of 6 boats to fight over the minor placings. For specifics, see the results section on the website. The “X” flag had a good work out with boats misbehaving at each start. Some took their medicine and returned to start correctly while others were not so diligent.
Move of the day goes to Andrew Knowles (A2) who ignored doctor’s orders to clip-in his hobbles. No prizes for guessing what happened. At least he hung onto the mainsheet. Doctor, wife and crew ( same person) not happy !!
Recent sales mean we have a couple of different faces in different boats. Returning to the class after a long absence, Jeff Vance has purchased Ffast Lane (3719) from John Wilson and Karen Dawes has bought the, soon to be re-named, Fragrant Fuzzy (3858) from Greg ( Mudguts to his friends) Andrews.
Next Sunday we’re sailing around the fixed marks with a box start and finish. Start time will be around 1400hrs rather than 1325hrs.

Always plenty of stories after 2 races in an easterly.

Cruising Section March long weekend cruise to MOFSC
Another great long weekend was had at Mandurah with the Cruising Section on the long weekend 3-5 March. There was great support for this event with 22 boats going down including 2 yachts San Michelle and Carpe Diem. It was excellent to have some ‘yachties’ joining us for the long weekend.
Rob Schmitz – skipper of San Michelle won the Mandurah Cruising Section Yacht Challenge trophy donated by Neil Martin for sailing on his own in his SS24 San Michelle from SoPYC to Mandurah which as we know is no mean feat especially taking down the mast to get under Fremantle Bridge by yourself!!
The MOFSC organised a great meal for 60 of us in our own function room on Saturday night. On Sunday night 30 of us had dinner on the foreshore at Murphy’s Irish Pub. During the days many of us took advantage of the great weather and did a host of activities from spending “happy hours” on different boats, walking along the foreshore, visiting an Art Gallery in the main street of Mandurah, visiting the Mandurah foreshore markets (including pony rides for some of the kids) on Sunday morning and some walked across the new Mandurah Bridge which is very impressive.
It was a great weekend with being able to enjoy Mandurah and have a wonderful relaxing time with friends new and old.
Again thank you to our Cruising In Company Committee who have organised another great social event for ALL the South of Perth Yacht Club members to come and enjoy. It is always good to be able to go to other clubs and enjoy their hospitality. This is what the Cruising In Company section is all about, getting our members together to enjoy a wonderful time together at different venues.
