Member News
Our member Madeleine Rennie was, last Thursday, awarded one of Japan's highest honours at a ceremony at the Consulate of Japan in WA at which we were present as guests to witness. She was awarded The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays by the Consul General, Mr Toru Suzuki, at the Official Residence in Peppermint Grove.
|
There have been only 3 other Australians ever awarded this honour and in Madeleine's case, it was for exceptional services rendered to Japanese citizens through the City Sisters Association from 1985 to present.

Club Training, there is a positive vibe around the Club with Club training back on and sailors are now preparing for the March Long Weekend and Easter Weekend which is when most 2019 State Championships are held around the state.

2019 Mini Series. In the wake of recent successes at the Nationals the WA Regatta season continued with the Royal Perth Yacht Club 2019 Mini Series. SoPYC sailors participated and made our club look great on Matilda Bay. For Mini Series results please click on the links below.
|
Royal Perth Yacht Club did an awesome job keeping it simple and started multiple classes on the same line to keep waiting times minimum. We have reported each day from the regatta so if you want to read more please log on to the SoPYC Facebook page.
|
Learn to Sail. Our Learn To Sail programs have been filling up nicely and with the BW8s back in action we are finishing off a 'Start Crewing & Helming' course this week and they will, of course, be encouraged to become members and come sailing here on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Some of the course participants want to do the spinnaker course which will make them attractive as crew members in a few months.

It’s surprising how, with a bit of extra breeze, a group of finely tuned athletes can turn the most basic of manoeuvres into a regular fire drill and end up in a tangle of flaying ropes and flapping polyester. Still through all the mayhem the language is calm, collected and civilised (maybe).

She Who Must Be Obeyed had hardly cleared the jetty when lucky John Hassen took a dip and even though Kevin was holding the tiller at the time, rule #1 of sailing: It’s never the crew’s fault, applies. Vice Commodore Midolo and Gordon had their world on an angle when approaching the leeward mark in the first race and as observed by Rear Commodore Carl, the only current World Champion sailing in our fleet on Sunday, Brian De Vries managed a baptism (of sorts) while crewing aboard Spot The Difference. When quizzed after the race Greg (the skipper) was decidedly vague on the details but did mention that they were leading at the time. Again refer to rule #1

The following weekend (Sunday the 24th) are another two heats in the Club Championship. Further out on Labour Day weekend is the regatta at Mandurah. The NOR has been circulated by Fleet Captain Tim.

|
A club like ours is heavily dependent on volunteers. Without them, the Club simply could not function. To demonstrate how highly the Club values its volunteers, a BBQ last Friday evening, hosted by Commodore Phil Warwick, Vice Commodore John Midolo, Rear Commodores Carl Pettersson and Michael Cook, was attended by more than 150 volunteer members. Guests assembled on the lawns …
